great question. that comes into play on the second cast with "therefore diversity is good." a truly good logical argument should be a lot longer than this with many more premises.

What's a guiding principle for doing good? cc: @atlas

sean

@seanhart.eth

- ‘H' = "humanity’s survival" - 'P' = "problem solving” - 'D' = "statistical diversity” 1. Assume H is good 2. Assume D increases the chance of P 3. Assume P is necessary for H 4. Therefore, it can be inferred that D is necessary for likelihood of H diversity is necessary for survival.

therefore diversity is good. do what increases healthy diversity. diversity = biological, ideological, technical, cultural, geographical, neurological, etc.

This is really good. Is this a framework you inherited or something you developed?

Lot of assumptions in there 😏

sean

@seanhart.eth

the argument is something that has distilled in my head over many years, although I'm sure there have been many influences and likeminded thinkers. I chose that format because it's harder to counter formal logic with emotion.

320 characters is very limiting. go ahead and list them and we'll walk through them.

Interesting framework. I agree. Where does "1. Assume H is good" fit into the equation? It doesn't seem to have any influence on the rest of the variables.

@whit

I was being snarky. I agree with your entire premise. Diversity of backgrounds, experience, ideas, etc, absolutely improves the problem solving abilities of a group, which absolutely improves the likelihood of our species’ survival.

Ben

@0xbenersing.eth

Hmm. I wrestle with the broad applicability of that assumption. For example, I imagine most would agree Hitler negates this statement. Therefore a more nuanced assumption might be: "most of humanity wants to be good, most of the time". Need to give more thought to what that would mean for the proof.

Ben

@0xbenersing.eth

Or is it that humanity's survival is good, and not that humanity itself is inherently good?

sean

@seanhart.eth

right, humanity's survival being good is the first assumption. I agree that humanity itself has many examples of doing things counter to that throughout history.

increase the possibility that someone can subjectively identify what you're doing as bad so you can demonstrate with further accuracy that it's objectively good. as they say, perfect is the enemy of the good, so "doing good" is some nebulous balance of altruism, industriousness, and courage.

Structure your work to maximize happiness in systems - sometimes locally, sometimes globally. Don’t infringe on anyone’s civil liberties unless they’re infringing on someone else’s. Lift heavy ass weight so you’re strong enough to do the previous two.

knowing can’t have “good” without “bad”

sean

@seanhart.eth

because knowing is finding the limits. you have to cross the boundaries to truly grasp the capabilities and limitations of something.

minimizing suffering

A tricky part of this is differentiating between pain that leads nowhere ("suffering") and pain that leads somewhere ("growth")
