It’s a concept of the mind

Is anything we experience in this life 'real' then?

Agost Biro

@agostbiro.eth

Sure. The only thing real is the current moment, but once we start thinking about it, it’s gone already

MOLO

@molo

what does this actually even mean

_slow_crypto

@slowcrypto

What’s the concept? If only every moment is what’s real then you’re really alive until you’re not. What’s made up about that?

Agost Biro

@agostbiro.eth

No concept, no problem

Going out on a limb here but seems like death does its thing regardless of a view of it. If any number of religions are right, for instance: no concept, big problem?

Agost Biro

@agostbiro.eth

All religions are right if you know where to look. “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”

Idk..We are the only living organism conscious of our own mortality, but entropy is a general rule of our universe. Plants, insects etc will all die even though they have no conception of death. The Sun will also die so will Earth whether we conceptualize it or not. I'm sorry to break it to you but death is super real.

Agost Biro

@agostbiro.eth

Does the insect die or do you see it die?

Lajos Deme

@silentrunner.eth

Ah! so what you're saying basically is that you agree with the von Neumann interpretation of Schrödinger's cat? (Conscious minds must observe the box for the cat to be either dead/alive)

Lajos Deme

@silentrunner.eth

Perhaps, we have no way of telling which theory is correct... however with this one you go down an even deeper rabbit hole, beginning with what is consciousness in the first place lol? Why can't every object, such a the box and the cat be an observer as well?

Agost Biro

@agostbiro.eth

Yes, that’s a great question to ponder

_slow_crypto

@slowcrypto

But specifically, how about death? Could you explain your original cast? Pithy phrases are great when they summarise a deep concept. I’m curious what the logic is to arrive at “death is made up”.

Agost Biro

@agostbiro.eth

Concepts are not real, they’re thought constructs and everybody has their own version. The only thing real is the current moment, but if we start thinking about it, it’s fake already. Death, the most pervasive concept that captures the human mind, is an arbitrary label that we attach to... longcast.jam.so/jjTzWn

What of the concept that ‘my family member was here and now they’re not’? Do I need to will my mind out of the concept of ‘missing someone’? What does that do to that relationship/memory? What of emotion? Might it callous them? (Useful signposts as they are for appropriate human behaviour and wellbeing.)

You don’t need to do anything. If you’re seeking help with these problems, I encourage you to explore The Work of Byron Katie

If you go deep enough everything is made up. The harder question is when and how it becomes more useful to buy into this fantasy. Similar veins are money, time, distinct objects, 3d space. Reality is an illusion of the brain but a useful one.
